The Taste of Tradition
The holidays are such a special time for so many people. It’s a time to come together as a family, take a break from our fast-paced lives, and savor one another’s company over some delicious food.
Pickles have been part of our family’s holiday tradition for many years… let us tell you a little about it.
Polly Whitehouse was born in Nelson County, Kentucky in 1920. She was the only girl with three hungry brothers, so a lot of cooking happened in her home. Polly’s mom made it clear to everyone in their neighborhood that their home was always open to family, guests, and visitors.
Polly continued her mother’s legacy as a gracious host, and could easily be crowned the Queen of Hospitality. As a child, I (Karen) remember weddings, baby showers, holiday dinners, and more. But the biggest celebrations were birthdays! There were balloons, party favors, cakes, and candles. And if you were lucky enough to go to one of my mom’s birthday parties, you left feeling just as special as the birthday guy or gal!
As you can see, I learned at a young age the importance of hospitality and the art of making people feel comfortable in our home from my mother. This tradition of hospitality has been passed down in our family for four generations now.
Polly’s Pickles originated in my mother’s modest Kentucky kitchen in the 1960s.
One of her signature dishes was pickles. We know, it’s not something you normally see as a side dish at Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner, but it was always there, and you best believe that everyone in the family made sure to have one of those pickles while they had the chance!
Those rare times when she served them to family and friends, people raved about them. Our most treasured memories involve eating these sweet, savory pickles around her dining room table at family gatherings.
After my mother passed away, my daughter (also named Polly) and I continued the tradition of making Polly’s Pickles for family celebrations. We just couldn’t imagine our family gatherings without them!
When friends kept asking us to make these pickles for them, we realized they were something truly special.
We started Polly’s Pickles to keep the time-consuming art of making Polly’s recipe for candied, dill pickles alive and available for others to enjoy.
Time shared over the tastes and smells of delicious food is a way we all connect with the special people in our lives and create lasting, joyful memories.
From our family to yours, thank you for supporting Polly’s Pickles. We are thankful for the opportunity to share our legacy with you. We hope you enjoy eating and sharing these unique pickles with family and friends for many years to come.
